Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Iliotibial Band Syndrome [ITBS]

ITBS is a common knee injury that usually presents with pain and tenderness on palpation of the lateral aspect of the knee. It is considered a non-traumatic overuse injury often seen in runners. In ITBS syndrome weakness of hip abductors muscles and this condition is also caused by compression of local adipose tissues.

Physiotherapy Management

Modalities – ultrasound, IFT, muscle stimulation, hot pack to reduce pain and swelling.

Rehabilitation – exercise to stretch the iliotibial band.

Myofascial treatment to break the trigger points or reduce the pain and stretching of the muscles.

Exercise to strengthen the abductor's muscles and stabilize the hip.

  1. Hip bridge with the resistance band.
  2. Sideline hip abduction.
  3. Core strengthening.
  4. Isometric hip abduction.
